Text extraction reads the embedded text layer in digitally-created PDFs - it's instant and perfectly accurate. OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is needed for scanned documents and images where text is locked inside pixels. OCRFire automatically detects which method to use and applies the right one.

For clean 300 DPI scans of standard fonts, accuracy is typically 95–99%. Quality drops with low-resolution images, poor lighting, heavy skew, handwriting, or decorative typefaces. Selecting the correct language in the settings panel significantly improves results.

PDF, JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, BMP, and DOCX. HTML files are also supported - the tool strips markup and returns plain text. For scanned images, any of the image formats work directly without converting to PDF first.

Yes - OCRFire supports 100+ languages via Tesseract.js including Arabic, Chinese Simplified, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Select your document's language from the settings before running OCR.

The OCR tool itself doesn't unlock PDFs. Open the file in your browser's PDF viewer (or use the Unlock PDF tool) to remove the password first, then run OCR on the unlocked version.

No hard limit - processing runs in your browser. A 100-page scanned PDF may take several minutes depending on your device. There is no cap that stops the process mid-way.
